This volume presents some recent works by the architect Manuel Herz, at the same time an educated professional, installed in Basel in the heart of Western affluence and a restless intellectual in perpetual motion, who leaves comfortable Europe, and lately closed in on itself out of fear of the Other, to study refugee camps as new forms of contemporary urbanism, documenting with patience and analytical rigour the precarious living conditions in the refugee settlements of Western Sahara. In his projects and realisations, it is not possible to discern any repetition of forms, materials or spatial arrangements that represent a constant manner, but rather each intervention can be seen as an autonomous experiment.

The questions associated with each situation prompt Herz to reset the repertoire of possible choices each time to respond instead with a specific proposal that only partly resembles the one that precedes it or the one that will follow it.
